IB programme

What exactly does it mean to become an IB World School? What are the benefits for students?

Becoming an IB World School means embracing international standards of quality education, emphasizing holistic student development and committing to continuous improvement. For students, this means access to a curriculum that is academically challenging, develops independence, critical thinking, a global outlook and prepares them to study anywhere in the world.

The IB summarises the IB Learner Profile - ten characteristics of an ideal graduate: Inquirer, Knowledgeable, Thinker, Communicator, Principled, Open-minded, Caring, Risk-taker, Balanced, Reflective.

Holistic development is at the heart of the IB philosophy - the goal is not just to "produce a successful student" but to "produce a well-rounded and value-anchored young person who thinks about the world and wants to improve it".

How is the IB Diploma Programme different from regular Czech education?

IB DP is a two-year programme for 16-19 year old students (i.e. 3rd and 4th year of secondary school). Compared to the Czech Baccalaureate, it offers:
a choice of 6 subjects from different areas (languages, mathematics, natural sciences, humanities),

  • compulsory core (CORE): Theory of Knowledge, Extended Essay, CAS,

  • Teaching in English,

  • strong emphasis on skills, not just knowledge,

  • formative assessment and international exams.

What is the relationship between IB and admission to foreign and Czech universities?

The IB Diploma is recognised by hundreds of universities around the world. Most of them offer specific admission requirements to IB students. In the Czech Republic, the IB Diploma is recognised as the equivalent of a high school diploma (often with nostrification). Here you will find list of universities from all over the world that are registered with the IBO and recognise the IB DP:

You can also filter for specific countries. If you don't find a university here that you are interested in studying at, it doesn't mean that it doesn't accept IB DP education, it just isn't registered with the IBO. It is best to contact the university directly and find out the details, it is possible that they accept the IB DP as proof of secondary education anyway.

How does the programme develop key competences for the 21st century?

The IB DP emphasises:

  • Analytical and critical thinking (Theory of Knowledge and other subjects),

  • Research skills (Extended Essay),

  • Personal Development and Social Responsibility (CAS),

  • Communication, collaboration, digital literacy and global citizenship.

How does the IB promote student autonomy, critical thinking and responsibility?
  • The student chooses the subjects and topic of the essay.

  • They are responsible for planning their projects and managing their time.

  • Keeps reflective journals, participates in debates, argues.

  • Learns self-motivation and perseverance.

What does a typical school day look like in the IB programme?
  • 6-7 teaching hours per day,

  • most of the teaching in English,

  • independent work on essays, CAS activities,

  • individual consultations with teachers,

  • blocks for TOK or mentoring.

How are students assessed - grades vs. formative assessment?
  • Combination of formative (continuous) assessment and final IB exams,

  • Emphasis on feedback and self-evaluation,

  • final assessment (0-7 points per subject, max. 45 points in total).

What are the experiences of students in other candidate or IB schools?
  • Students value the international environment, project work and independence,

  • They often mention the challenge, but also the meaningfulness and practical application of what they have learned,

  • For them, the IB Diploma is a "passport to the world".

What exchange programmes or projects are possible within the IB?
  • International student conferences (e.g. IB World Student Conferences),

  • Collaboration on online projects between schools,

  • possibility of individual exchange visits as agreed between schools.

How can a student be connected to the global community?
  • Online platform MyIB for students and teachers,

  • International projects within CAS,

  • Meetings with experts from all over the world,

  • a strong alumni network of IB graduates.

How can the IB school profile help in building school prestige?
  • IB is a sign of quality and innovation,

  • helping to attract ambitious students and teachers,

  • increases the school's credibility with parents and partners,

  • international recognition = better cooperation with universities and companies.
